ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Tuesday made public an agreement that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and his family purportedly signed to secure safe exit from Pakistan.

Malik revealed the agreement, saying that Nawaz and his family went into exile after signing a deal with former president Pervez Musharraf.

Malik also displayed the agreement carrying signatures of Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and other members of their family. The PML-N had been denying any agreement between its leadership and former president since long, but Malik said that Sharif had struck deal and sought pardon from Musharraf before he left for Saudi Arabia.

"Nawaz Sharif gave the application for pardon on December 2, 2000 and it was approved by the then chief executive of the country, Gen Musharraf, on December 9 the same year," he said.

The minister said that agreement signed by Nawaz Sharif was for a 10-year exile, but he violated the agreement and returned to the country before the deadline.

In a move to downplay the storm triggered by the superior judiciary after its ruling on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), Malik said that it was Sharif brothers not the Pakistan People's Party who signed the NRO.

Malik vowed that he would present evidence against Nawaz on daily basis, adding that the PML-N would have to tell the people about its relations with Mansoor Ijaz, a Pakistani-American businessman at the centre of controversy. The minister said that Nawaz Sharif knew that basically the NRO promulgated by Musharraf was not prompted or demanded by the PPP leadership.

It may be mentioned that the NRO was initiated during Musharraf's tenure and it was cleared by the cabinet of former prime minister Shaukat Aziz.

End.
