KARACHI: MQM chief Altaf Hussain has assured President Asif Ali Zardari that the MQM will continue supporting the PPP and the government.

He gave the assurance during a telephonic conversation with the president, the spokesperson to the President, Senator Farhatullah Babar said.

Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik called on Zardari at the Bilawal House and briefed him about his meeting with the MQM chief in London. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also present during the meeting. Former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani also called on the president and briefed him about his consultations with different parties about the caretaker government.

According to sources, the current political situation, Tahirul Qadri's planned long march to Islamabad and the coming closer of the PPP and PML-N in Punjab and other important matters came under discussion.

Sources said that President Zardari termed the political development in Punjab very positive, and passage of a unanimous resolution in Punjab Assembly a good sign for democracy.

The president said that an impartial caretaker government will be appointed in consultation with the political parties. Zardari said that all possible steps will be taken for holding of free and fair general elections in the country. An official handout regarding Rehman Malik's meeting with the president said that the law and order situation in the country was discussed during the meeting.

The interior minister briefed the president about security arrangements made on the occasion of Imam Hussain's (AS) Chehlum. Senator Farhatullah Babar said that recent incidents of terrorism and militancy, including the assassination of 21 Levies personnel, attack on polio vaccinators, the attack on workers in Swabi, the explosion at Mastung and the recent blast in Karachi that resulted in the loss of precious lives also came under discussion.
