MQM parts ways with govt, again

17 February, 2013

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Saturday announced parting ways with Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and accused it of patronising criminals, creating hindrances for MQM ministers and non-implementation of local government system, despite its passage from the provincial assembly of Sindh.

Addressing an emergency press conference at party's headquarters Nine Zero, the MQM Coordination Committee Deputy Convener and Parliamentary leader, Dr Farooq Sattar, said that the decision was final and would not be reverted.

He said that it was not the first time that they had announced to leave the coalition government. He went on to say that despite facing acute hardships and tolerating resentment, MQM supported PPP for the sake of democracy, reconciliation and stability of the country. "If we had quitted the government earlier, we would be accused of destabilising democracy for our party's interest. We played our due role for durable democracy by supporting PPP for almost five years," he stated.

Dr Sattar said they joined hands with PPP and supported it in its hard times, hoping that PPP would not repeat its mistakes, but in response, PPP create problems for the MQM.

Presenting a charge sheet against former political partner, he said that PPP formed People's Amn Committee (PAC), whose thugs rendered bloodshed, extortion and lawlessness in the city of lights. They abducted and killed innocent people, after identifying them. They killed them in an inhuman manner and later released the videos of their killing via internet. They ruined peace of the city and compelled investors to leave the city and wind up their business. They also murdered innocent traders of Shershah Kabari Market. On the other hand, the PPP government allowed the criminals go scot-free and let them get the bail.

He further said that now the PPP government withdrew cases against these criminal elements. MQM boycotted the proceedings of Sindh assembly in protest against withdrawal, but the government's behaviour encouraged those criminals and recently they killed office-bearers of the said market committee. He further said that instead of nabbing criminals, PPP withdrew their names from the bounty list of the government, while ignoring the protest of MQM straightaway.

Talking about local government system, he said that the law of the local government system was to be implemented with immediate effect, but the government avoided implementation of the law so far and put masses on the mercy of bureaucrats.

He further said that hurdles were created for the legislators of MQM. We raised the issues continuously with the President and Co-chairman of PPP Asif Ali Zardi, but in vain.

End.
