MQM activists among 12 dead as killings continue in Karachi

KARACHI: A fresh wave of violence claimed as many as 12 lives, including two activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Tuesday.

In the first incident, two activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were gunned down in an act of target killing in the precincts of Surjani police. Police said the victims were identified as 43-year-old Muhammad Riaz, son of Abdul Ghaffar, and Muhammad Yaqoob, 25, son of Muhammad Sharif. The bodies were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. Police said the men were targeted when they were going somewhere on a motorcycle. Police said three armed men riding two motorcycles opened fire on the MQM leaders and fled from the scene. Riaz was the committee member of the MQM Unit-7 of Surjani Sector and Yaqoob was also a member of the same unit.

Meanwhile, an elderly man and his two sons were shot dead near Pan Mandi in the Risala police precincts. According to police, the deceased were identified as 60-year-old Muhammad Raza and his two sons, Kumail Raza and Abbas Raza. The bodies and the injured were taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for autopsy. Police said that the victims ran a spice shop at Jodia Bazaar.

Separately, a man was shot dead while another was injured at Yousuf Goth in the precincts of Surjani police. Police said Nasir, 20, son of Akhtar, and his friend, Salman, 22, was injured, when two armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them. Nasir died on the spot. The body and the injured were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Police said an old enmity was behind the killing.

Meanwhile, a man was killed in Korangi in the precincts of Korangi police. Police officials said the deceased, 34-year-old Amir, son of Afsar, was found dead near his home in Korangi. Police officials said the deceased, a driver, was kidnapped shortly after he left home for his workplace. The body was brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for autopsy.

Separately, a barber named Shafiq was gunned down and another two were injured when unidentified men opened fire on them near Bakra Hotel in the limits of Kharadar police. Police officials said that Shafiq died on the spot and two other shopkeepers, Aslam and Sajjad, were injured. The body and the injured were shifted to the CHK. Police said that the motive behind the incident had not been ascertained yet.

Meanwhile, an elderly man was gunned down near his house at Akber Shah Goth in the Zaman Town police precincts. Officials said the victim, Siddiq, 55, was gunned down near his home by armed motorcyclists. His body was shifted to the JPMC for autopsy.

Separately, a man was killed at Ranchore Lane in the precincts of Garden police. According to police, the victim had not been identified yet.

Meanwhile, the Pak Colony police have found the body of an unidentified man from Lyari River.

The Shah Latif police have found the body of a girl from the bushes in Gulistan Society. Police said the body was packed in a gunny bag.
