MQM activist, doctor among four killed in Khi violence

29 January, 2012

KARACHI: Four people, including a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activist and a doctor belonging to Shia sect, fell prey to separate acts of violence in the city on Saturday.

The 60-year-old doctor, Jaffar Mohsin Rizvi, was shot dead outside his house in Block 12 of Gulberg when he was reading a newspaper on a bench early in the morning.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where scores of people gathered to express resentment over the incident. No case was registered till filing this report.

SHO Raja Tariq said the deceased, who was the owner of Karwan-e-Ahle Abba and a trustee of Imambargah Ahle Abba, might have been killed over sectarian ground as his family members in their statements confirmed that he had no dispute with anyone.

Allama Abbas Komaili and Majlis-e-Wahdat Muslimeen Chief Maulana Raja Nasir have condemned the killing of the doctor and demanded of the government to take the accused to task. They said after the killings of lawyers, now doctors were being targeted on sectarian ground.

The funeral prayers of Dr Jaffar will be held at Rizvia Imambargah on Monday after Zuhrain prayers.

It may be noted that at least 10 doctors have lost their lives last year.

In another incident, an activist of MQM, Muhammad Aslam alias Achra, son of Abdul Qayyum, was killed while three other party workers, Tahir, 35; Azeem, 52; and Ali, 35; sustained severe bullet wounds in a drive-by shooting in Ram Swami Area within the jurisdiction of Garden police station.

Police said some four unidentified armed men targeted them from backside when they were sitting outside Al-Khaleej Apartment in Usmanabad near BP factory. Resultantly, all four MQM workers received severe bullet wounds and were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) where Aslam succumbed to his injures during treatment while the condition of others was stated to be critical. SHO Zahid Hussain said the victims were active workers of unit 32 of MQM Lyari Sector. No case was registered till filing of this report.

Similarly, a young man was shot dead near Mehmand Hotel, Lyari within the limits of Baghdadi police station. The identity of the victim was yet to be ascertained. The victim appeared to be Mianwali. The body was shifted to CHK for medico-legal formalities and later moved to Edhi Morgue for identification. Police have registered a case against unidentified men on the complaint of state.

Separately, police found the 10-day-old body of a man from a drain at Singer Chowrangi within the limits of Awami Colony police station. The body was shifted to JPMC and later moved to Edhi Morgue for identification.
