Lack of daycare centres... By Fatima

Daycare centres play an important role in the lives of working women. Lack of childcare facilities affects the balance of work and family for both men and women. Safe, protected and economically viable daycare centres are a need of working parents. Many families rely on two incomes in order to make both ends meet. A majority of parents now work regardless of the age of their children. Shortage of daycare centres in big and small cities of the country is an immense inconvenience for working women. Existing daycare centres are so expensive. Women who belong to the middle class cannot afford them. A majority of the daycare centres are private and therefore they can entertain only a specific number of children. The shortage of daycare centers compels working women to pay huge amount of fee.
Daycare services under Pakistan's labour laws should also be provided to the lower class working women by the government. A daycare system can generate employment and also do away with many social and economic problems by developing a healthy mindset of people towards a prosperous lifestyle. It can be an essential way for grooming children from different economic backgrounds to enter kindergartens, primary school and beyond by facilitating working parents.
It is the society's responsibility to facilitate women to pursue their careers more effectively so they can contribute towards national development. A cohesive national investment in both the public and private sector in the daycare business needs to be made. It is getting difficult for working ladies to depend on hiring maids.
