LHC stays vote verification in NA-118
19 December, 2013
LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Wednesday restrained the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) from verifying thumb impressions of votes cast in NA-118, Lahore-1, in May 11 general elections.
It issued the restraint order on a petition of PML-N's MNA Malik Riaz, who challenged an order of the election tribunal to NADRA to verify votes of his constituency.
Additional Attorney General Naseer Ahmad Bhutta told the court that the ballot papers were used for secret balloting and could not be made public. He said that the thumb impressions of voters were not taken on ballot paper but on the counter-file due to which their verification was impossible.
The bench barred NADRA from verifying thumb impressions of the voters and adjourned the hearing for an indefinite time.
