LB polls can be held within a week: Qaim

SUKKUR: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that the local bodies (LB) elections were not a challenge for the provincial government and the elections could be held within a week if all the arrangements were finalised.
Talking to media persons at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh Bhutto on Sunday after laying a floral wreath on the grave of ZA Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and others, he said that all arrangements for the sixth death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto had been finalised. He said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairman of Pakistan People's Party (PPP), will also attend the ceremony.
On the local bodies (LB) elections, Qaim said the Sindh government did not want to escape from the polls. He added that amendments were being introduced to the Local Government Bill after consulting all the political parties.
Qaim said that the targeted operation in Karachi had produced positive results in restoring peace.PPI adds: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that they could hold the local bodies elections within a week but the Sindh government would not make any decision in haste and if it found it suitable, the LB elections could be held in March asthey also wanted their opponents to fully prepare for the same.He said the PPP govt also wanted the people to cast their votes freely and the elections should be free and fair.
The chief minister was talking to journalists here on Sunday. Strict security arrangements were made on the occasion before the arrival of Sindh CM. The Bhutto mausoleum was sealed.
The CM said that the Election Commission had announced the schedule for the LB polls in January 18 in Sindh, but three provinces — KP, Punjab and Sindh — wanted these elections on a single date in March. He further said that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had entered politics and a seat was his right. "Bilawal will contest when the party decides."
The chief minister further said that conditions in Karachi had been bad for the last 25 years, and it would take time to improve the law and order situation there.
He said that target killings had declined in Karachi while various political parties had been consulted about the city situation. He announced that the sixth anniversary of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto would be observed with dignity, and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asif Ali Zardari would address a gathering of party workers.
Shah laid floral wreaths and offered Dua at the graves of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Murtaza Bhutto and Shahnawaz Bhutto.Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, MPA Khursheed Junejo, MNA Ayaz Soomro and other PPP workers were also present on the occasion.
