LB polls: SC seeks cut off date from defence ministry

08 January, 2014

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has sought deadline from ministry of defence till January, 9 for conducting Local Bodies (LB) polls in cantonment board besides directing Election Commission (EC) to hold these polls after obtaining new date from defence ministry.

A 3-member bench of SC led by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani took up the case for hearing Tuesday

Justice Azmat Saeed has remarked "non holding elections in February is old story. Some new story be told. What is problem with federal government in holding election. Conducting election is job of EC, not the federal government.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has remarked " as per law, it is responsibility of EC to hold elections in cantonment. . Additional Attorney General (AAG) Shah Khawar told the court election could not be held in cantonment board in February due to non completion of arrangements. There more time is needed to seek new date in this respect. Therefore, court should grant more time", he prayed.

Justice Azmat Saeed remarked " this story has become old. Therefore, tell us a new story and we will then think over it.

The court directed EC to obtain new date from ministry of defence and hold election in cantonment board besides furnishing reply to court on January, 9.
