Karachi tops in overall province-wide crimes

KARACHI: Although Sindh police claims decline of overall crime incidents in Sindh this year as compared to last year, the murder, robbery, vehicle snatching/theft, abduction and kidnapping for ransom cases have registered an increase. The Karachi tops in murders and other kinds of crimes, according to official statistics.
A report compiled by Sindh police department, containing comparative figures of the crimes committed from Jan 01 to Sept 15 this year and the corresponding period last year, says the murder cases registered an increase of 328, robberies 16 and kidnapping/ abduction 75 in the province. In Karachi, the murder cases surged by 382, robberies by 186 and vehicle theft/snatching by 329.
The region-wise crime report says that there was decrease in overall crimes in Karachi as 45,593 crimes of different nature took place in eight and half a month of 2010 while in same period this year the registered crime was 30,707 showing a decrease of 14,886. In Hyderabad region 10,486 crimes were committed which rose to 10,852 this year during the period under report. Crime declined by 81 incidents in Mirpurkhas region as 3884 crimes were reported last year and 3,803 crimes this year. Sukkur region registered increase of 1,962 crimes as 7,433 cases were reported last year and 9,395 this year while in Larkana region 7,231 crimes were reported last year and 7,098 this year by Sept 15 showing decrease of 133 cases. This way the overall crime difference for the province stands at 12,772 as 61,855 crimes of different nature were reported this year compared to 74,627 in corresponding period last year.
Breakup of murder cases: In Karachi 1,043 people were murdered in eight and half a month of 2010 while 1,425 in same period this year showing increase of 382. The murder cases declined by 13 in Hyderabad region as 339 people were killed this year and 352 last year. In Mirpurkhas 116 persons were murdered last year and 118 this year. In Sukkur region 423 killings took place last year and 437 this year showing increase of 14 while there was decrease of 57 murder cases in Larkana region as 449 people were killed last year and 392 this year. Overall, 2,711 persons killed in eight and half a month this year against 2,383 last year across the province.
Attempt to murder: In Karachi police range, 967 cases were reported this year by Sept 15 and 918 last year in same period. In Hyderabad 808 last year and 810 this year; Mirpurkhas 285 last year and 251 this year; Sukkur region 471 last year and 539 this year while in Larkana range 501 last year and 398 this year.
Kidnapping for ransom: Karachi tops in such cases as 51 kidnappings for ransom took place last year and 54 this year; 17 last year and 25 this year in Hyderabad, one last year and three this year in Mirpurkhas; 25 last year and 20 this year in Sukkur region while 31 last year and 24 this year in Larkana region. In all 125 kidnapping for ransom cases took place last year and 126 this year in Sindh.
Robberies: Karachi also tops in robberies as 2,105 such cases took place last year and 2,291 this year showing an increase of 186 cases; In Hyderabad such cases declined from 531 last year to 402 this year; In Mirpurkhas from 114 last year to 99 this year; There was slight increase of 3 cases in Sukkur as 254 cases reported last year and 257 this year while in Larkana robberies declined from 225 last year to 196 this year. The overall figure shot up from 3,229 last year to 3245 this year.
Vehicle theft/snatching: There is also no match to Karachi in this crime as 1,492 cases of four-wheelers and 4,856 cases of bikes were reported last year and 1,478 cases of four-wheelers and 5,199 bikes this year; In Hyderabad 188 cases of 4-wheelers and 404 cases of bikes reported last year and 146 cases of 4-wheelers and 404 of bikes reported this year; In Mirpurkhas 23 cases of 4-wheelers and 107 of bikes were reported last year and 22 cases of 4-wheelers and 96 of bikes this year; In Sukkur region 101 cases of 4-wheelers and 319 cases of bikes were reported last year and 104 cases of 4-wheelers and 329 of bikes this year while in Larkana region 71 cases of 4-wheelers and 231 of bikes were reported last year and 41 cases of 4-wheelers and 209 of bikes this year. A total of 1,875 cars and other vehicles and 5,917 bikes were snatched/stolen last year and 1791 cars and other vehicles and 6,237 bikes this year in eight and half a month.
