04 February, 2012
KARACHI: Chief Justice Sindh High Court Mushir Alam has said the judiciary is still better than all institutions of the state. He said judiciary and democracy were interlinked and if courts would be respected, democracy would also be nourished. He was speaking at a ceremony to hand over cars to 42 district and sessions judges and 11 ATC judges on the premises of SHC on Friday. He said independent judiciary also gives difficult decisions that are not liked by everyone. But a judge, he said, should be honest and give a decision after hearing advocates of both the sides. He said decisions are presently being delayed because of the shortage of judges in the Sindh High Court. He said this shortage would be removed soon. He said some of the judges would be appointed in the current month. Those who attended the ceremony included Justice Maqbool Baqir, Justice Faisal Arab, Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, justice Aqil Ahmad Abbasi, Justice Nisar Mohammad Sheikh, Registrar Abdur Rasool Memon and Justcie Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi. PPI adds: The SHC chief justice said the judiciary must be free from the executive control so that it could work properly as an institution of the state, adding that the judiciary in Pakistan was going through an historic period. He said that despite meager resources and tremendous pressure from various sections of society, judges were doing their best, adding that an independent judiciary was an integral part of democracy. Justice Mushir Alam said that all citizens were equal in the eyes of law. He said in democracy people have even more expectation from the judges. He said a judge has to exercise patience, adding that an impatient judge cannot be fair no matter how intelligent he may be. He said that some decisions might provoke a few but justice should be delivered regardless of the consequences. He said that the entire system would collapse if the judiciary stops working properly. He thanked the Sindh government for arranging the cars for the district and sessions judges, adding that the transportation issue was a longstanding problem of the judges. He hailed that his team was performing its duties to the best of its abilities. He said that shortages of judges in courts still exist but the issue has been taken up at the highest level and would soon be addressed. End.
