Iran-Iraq electricity line sabotaged, policeman killed

BAGHDAD: An Iraqi policeman was killed and two others were wounded during a sabotage attack on powerlines in the province of Diyala, northeast of Baghdad, a government spokesman said on Wednesday. "The electricity supply of 400 megawatts from the Iranian city of Kermanshah to Diyala has been suspended as a result of a sabotage Tuesday that destroyed four towers and cut the line," said electricity ministry spokesman Mussaab al-Mudares. Mudares said the attack took place in the region of Lake Hamrin, some 50 kilometres northeast of Baquba. The collapse of the towers killed one officer and wounded two others. The ministry announced on Monday the establishment of a new power line of 400 megawatts between the Iranian city of Karha and Amara, 300 kilometres to the south of Baghdad. Four lines, with a total capacity of 1,000 megawatts, now link Iran to Iraq, which suffers from severe power shortages. Meanwhile, in the disputed northern city of Kirkuk, two people were killed in separate explosions caused by magnetic bombs attached to their cars. End.
