Ijaz requests memo panel to appoint commissioner
08 February, 2012
ISLAMABAD: US businessman Mansoor Ijaz on Tuesday submitted an application before the memo commission for appointment of a local commissioner to record his testimony outside Pakistan. Mansoor Ijaz through his counsel Akram Sheikh submitted an application in the memo commission which stated that the applicant (Mansoor Ijaz) can make himself available either in Dubai or London on the directions of the commission and the local commissioner, if appointed by this commission, could record his evidence at the designated place outside Pakistan under Rule 5 of Order 26 of the Code of Civil Procedure. The applicant stated that Husain Haqqani was free to travel outside Pakistan pursuant to an order of the Supreme Court. Ijaz stated that the fact that the examination of a relevant witness might entail a heavy cost was not a sufficient ground in the way of forming the local commissioner. As far as the security cover promised by Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq and Interior Minister Rehman Malik was concerned, the applicant did not trust them. Ijaz requested the commission to appoint the suitable local commissioner for recording evidence outside Pakistan as mandated by the order of the Supreme Court on December 30, 2011 and January 30, 2012. Earlier, Ijaz had moved an application in the Supreme Court, saying that he could not come to Pakistan over security concerns and that the court should direct the judicial commission to record his statement outside Pakistan. But the court had refused to hear his application. End.
