ISLAMABAD: Fakhruddin G Ebrahim has said that he accepted the slot of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) as a challenge as he had no urge at this stage to go for such a post.

Commenting on the rumours regarding his resignation on Thursday, he said, "In my view, the safe future of Pakistan and our new generation is associated with fair, free and transparent elections."

Talking exclusively to this correspondent, the CEC said he would fulfil the duty entrusted upon him because it was a national obligation as the nation had reposed confidence in him for which he was obliged greatly to the countrymen and this confidence of the nation called for a higher sense of responsibility on his part.

He said history had steered the nation to a grave crossroads and the nation needed transparent elections. The CEC said, "I still work 8-10 hours daily at this ripe age but it is not a favour, rather a responsibility."

He said in the dictatorial regime of Ziaul Haq, he was the first judge who refused to take oath under the PCO and promised that he would hold elections in a transparent manner with steadfastness and commitment.

End.
