Haqqani to file review plea against memo commission

08 January, 2012

ISLAMABAD: Former ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani will move a review petition in the Supreme Court tomorrow (Monday) against the court's December 30 order about the constitution of a commission to probe the memo scandal.

Talking to our sources, Muhammad Idrees Ashraf, who is assisting Asma Jahangir in memo case, said that the review petition had been drafted and it would be filed tomorrow.

He said that the court had heard the arguments on the maintainability of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz petitions and it had not only accepted the PML-N petitions but also formed the commission to probe the matter.

He said that the court had given more relief to the petitioners than they had asked for and the court had given the national security more priority than fundamental rights.

Meanwhile, another counsel of Husain Haqqani, Sajid Tanoli, who will appear as junior counsel before the inquiry commission, said that his client was innocent, therefore, they would strongly defend him.

Tanoli said that Syed Zahid Husain Bokhari would be the leading counsel for Haqqani before the 'inquiry commission' and he would assist him.

Talking about the appearance of Haqqani before the commission, he said that they would devise the final strategy Sunday (today) regarding the matter. Tanoli said that it was the duty of Mansoor Ijaz to prove the memo before the commission and they would submit their reply on his stance.

The counsel said that Ijaz had tried to spark a conflict among institutions but he would not succeed in his objective.

Meanwhile, Akram Sheikh, the counsel for Mansoor Ijaz, has clarified that his client had not written any letter or email to the inquiry commission.

Issuing a clarification on Saturday, the counsel stated, "Certain segments of the press have carried an old statement of Mansoor Ijaz's sent by him to the commission prior to engagement of his legal counsel, which stands superseded by his formal legal stance taken before the commission. That it is clarified that the only application filed on behalf of Mansoor Ijaz is the one filed through his counsel on January 6, 2012."

Ijaz is coming to Pakistan to testify his truthful version before the commission as and when he may be required and any verbal or written communications shall be done only through our office, Sheikh added.

End.
