RAWALPINDI: A trial court on Monday adjourned the hearing of ephedrine quota case until September 18 after distributing copies of challan among seven accused, including former parliamentarian Hanif Abbasi.
Accused Ghazanfar Ali, Basit Abbasi, Mohsin Rashid, Ahmed Bilal, Khawaja Asad, Saleem Sherazi and Hanif Abbasi appeared before Anti-Narcotics Court Special Judge Arshad Mehmood Tabassum and received copies of the challan. The counsel for accused Abdul Rashid Sheikh pleaded that the case be shifted to the Drug Court as the ephedrine chemical case does not fall in the domain of the Anti-Narcotics Court.
Meanwhile, hearing a separate petition, the court extended interim bail of two accused, Khawaja Asad and Salim Sherazi, until September 18 –the date of next hearing.
On July 29, 2012, the Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) had registered a case against Hanif Abbasi for his alleged involvement in misuse of 500kg ephedrine, which was to be used in manufacturing medicines locally. The accused has rejected the allegation of misusing the allotted quota, saying that he used it in making medicines which were available in different markets.
