11 October, 2012
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Wednesday evening said that the policy of national reconciliation pursued by the PPP government had been a success because for the first time in our history, a civil government was completing its tenure.
Talking to a group of PPP MPAs belonging to the Punjab led by Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, Minister of State for Interior at the Prime Minister's House, the premier said that the history of the PPP is a history of struggle for the downtrodden and rights of the people.
He said that the achievements of the PPP during four-and-a-half years include restoration of the Constitution in its original shape, autonomy to theprovinces and NFC Award. He said that when the PPP came into power, the foreign exchange reserves were very low and insufficient to cater to imports for even three months. However, due to prudent policies of the government, our reserves today stand at over 14 billion dollars and we have now become a wheat exporting country.
"Dependence on oil whose international prices kept on increasing added further pressure on the economy. The government, despite financial constraints, provided relief to the consumers by giving a subsidy in the last four-and-a-half years to share the burden of consumers," he maintained.
He said that the government will continue to work for the welfare of the people and will not shy away from challenges. "These achievements of the government are not ordinary achievements and are even acknowledged by its worst opponents," he added.
He advised the PPP workers and legislators to reach out and tell the people about these achievements.Mrs Faryal Talpur MNA, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for Information and Broadcasting, and Federal Minister Nazar Muhammad Gondal were also present during the meeting.
