Govt committed to holding LB polls in capital: Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Saturday said that the present government was committed to holding local body elections in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).
He said that the rural and urban divide will end in the upcoming local government setup being proposed for Islamabad. The setting up of a proposed metropolitan cooperation was a viable option in this regard.
The Interior minister said this while chairing a meeting of the committee constituted by the cabinet on September 20, 2013. Special assistant to the prime minister, Interior secretary, Cabinet secretary, CDA chairman and the ICT chief commissioner were among the participants.
The committee dilated upon the proposed Islamabad Capital Territory Local Bodies Act 2013.
Special assistant to the prime minister suggested creating simple laws that were easy to understand and did not leave any areas for misinterpretation. He pointed out certain anomalies in the existing law to improve them in the proposed law.
During the course of meeting, the interior minister advised the CDA chairman to work out a consistent policy to stop the usage of residential buildings for commercial activities.
Following this meeting, the federal minister also chaired a meeting of the heads of attached departments of the Ministry of Interior. In this meeting the minister impressed upon the officers to take action against the corrupt elements and also use their capabilities to bring visible change in their performance in order to facilitate the general public.
The minister further directed to hold weekly review meetings in each attached department, and the report be furnished to the minister regarding the new public-oriented initiatives and proposals and also highlighting a summary of their performance during the week.
The security arrangements for the headquarters and regional offices of the Directorate of Immigration and Passports were also discussed in the meeting. The minister directed security arrangements be augmented at all places.
In the meeting, the minister asked the Interior secretary to come up with a comprehensive and well-planned policy on the procedure of putting the names on Exit Control List (ECL). He also directed that audit report of last two years regarding the Ministry of Interior be put up to him at the earliest.
