Gilani assures support for projects in Karachi

12 April, 2012

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Wednesday assured the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) delegation that called on him at the Prime Minister's Secretariat that funds will be allocated and immediate efforts made for successful completion of various mega projects in Karachi.

Overseas Pakistanis Minister Dr Farooq Sattar, Ports and Shipping Minister Babar Khan Ghauri, Overseas Pakistanis State Minister Ahsan Nadeem and Senator Sughra Imam called on the prime minister and apprised him about the progress on various mega projects in Karachi, including Lyari Expressway, Karachi-Hyderabad M9 Motorway, Karachi Circular Railway and K-4 Water Supply Scheme. The prime minister was apprised that 70 percent of the work on Lyari Expressway project had been completed. He said that funds would be allocated for immediate resumption of work on the project and its early completion would be ensured.

Gilani said that a Malaysian firm had signed an agreement to undertake the Karachi-Hyderabad M9 Motorway project, adding that the company had been actively working to mobilise its resources for the project. The MQM delegation said that Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was willing to extend a loan of $1 billion on soft terms for the Karachi Circular Railway project. The project would provide respectable and efficient public transport facility to the residents of Karachi, they said.

The prime minister said the K-4 Water Supply project was a provincial matter, and he would ask the provincial government to prioritise the project in view of its importance for the citizens.

Gilani instructed Senator Sughra Imam to coordinate with the Finance Ministry, Planning Division and government of Sindh to streamline various issues regarding the projects and directed her to keep him abreast of the progress on regular basis. The MQM leaders thanked the prime minister for taking interest in the development projects of Karachi.

End.
