31 August, 2012
KABUL: Taliban gunmen shot dead Afghanitan's eastern Ghazni province's council chief Sahib Shah Qazi, local officials said.
The shooting took place in the evening in the Nawabad area of the province while Qazi was on the way home from work, provincial governor Musa Akarzada said. "One of his bodyguards was also injured in the attack and was taken to a nearby hospital in the city," he said.
A witnesses said that the gunmen were "in a car and opened fire on the provincial council chief and escaped the area." Ghazni police said that they have started investigations into the incident.
Sahib Shah had already escaped a number of life attempt attacks in the past. He has worked for nearly a year as the provincial council chief in the province. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the incident. Insurgents frequently target provincial officials who have links with the government.
On August 9, gunmen shot dead a leading lawyer of Ghazni province who worked in the Attorney General's office. The shooting took place when the head of the Attorney General's Appeals Department Haji Sahar Gul was traveling from his home to his office.
