Former minority MPA among eight killed in Karachi

KARACHI: Eight people, including a former lawmaker belonging to Ahmadi community, were killed in unabated wave of violence on Saturday.

In the first incident, the former legislator was gunned in Mehmoodabad 3 within the precincts of Baloch Colony police.

A police official said that unidentified men riding a motorcycle opened fire on 60-year-old Malik Atta. Resultantly, Atta received three bullets and was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he succumbed to his injuries. The body was handed over to the family.

The deceased was elected as an MPA in 1987 general election on a minority seat. Atta lived in Mehmoodabad 5 and was a father of three children and hailed from Sheikhupura, Punjab.

Separately, an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was killed in Dhobi Ghaat in the precincts of the Garden police. Police said that as many as four armed men opened fire on Shahid, 30, alias Dhobi, son of Basheer Ahmed. Shahid received multiple bullet wounds and died instantly. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for autopsy. He said that the deceased was an active worker of the MQM and father of two children.

Meanwhile, a Shia was shot dead in Chishti Nagar within the vicinity of Orangi Town police.

A police official said that 26-year-old Ali Hassan, son of Azhar Ali, was on the way to his workplace in his mini-truck. When he reached near Chishti Nagar unidentified men shot him and fled from the scene. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for autopsy. Ali was a resident of Orangi Town.

Separately, a man was killed while another was inured in a clash between two groups at Gharibabad in the precincts of the Malir City police.

According to police, the two groups resorted to firing after a clash. Resultantly, two passersby – Munawar Ali, 50, son of Mir Hazar, and Dost Muhammad, 35, son of Ali Akbar – sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to the JPMC. Doctors pronounced Ali dead while Muhammad is being treated.

In another incident, a man was shot dead in Sector 17/A Landhi in the precincts of Shah Latif police. Police said the deceased, identified as Mirza, son of Abdul Hadi, was shot dead by unidentified men. The body was shifted to the JPMC for autopsy. Police said further the deceased was a worker at a cattle farm at Bhains Colony and hailed form Haripur.

Separately, a man was killed at Jamali Goth in the precincts of Sohrab Goth police. A police official said unidentified men killed 40-year-old Haji Yaqoob, son of Ali Zaman. The body was brought to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. He said the police also seized a pistol from Yaqoob's possession. Police suspected that he was killed over an old enmity. The deceased was a resident of Patel Para.

Separately, two bodies packed in gunny bags were found from Bagh-e- Halar in the precincts of Garden police. Police said that they had rushed to the scene and shifted the bodies to the hospital for autopsy. The bodies were identified as Naseer Mengal, 35, and Muhammad Jameel, 30. Police also said unidentified men killed the men after kidnapping them. Police said Mengal was a worker of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Jameel was a labourer.
