For better or worse... By Hashim

A number of crucial issues are being faced by rural and urban society in Pakistan today. All these crucial problems have stemmed from a lack of good governance and no transparency or accountability. As a result, the governments, both federal and provincial, have invited blistering criticism from the media and civil society. However, the rulers are requested to promote good governance, transparency and accountability in all walks of life. The federal and provincial governments, NGOs such as USAID, the EU, UN bodies, civil society, development activists, media houses, local citizens and others are requested to promote civic engagements, to work on rural-urban services improvement, environmental protection and responsible resource use, civic engagement, girls education (nothing has changed in rural Sindh where more than 95 percent girls never attend school) and female empowerment.
It is indeed unfortunate that our past rulers did not slash the excessive government spending on non-productive projects but the present rulers should cut down this excessive government spending. It is unfortunate also that, so far, the rulers have not brought any relief of any kind for the ill-fated people of Pakistan. Instead, they have brought upon them several further miseries. It is a universal political fact that a mature leadership always guides its citizens in the right and true direction, and solidifies its commitment towards improving their lot. If our rulers are really determined to do something for the people of Pakistan, then it is also better for their own sake as our nation is already going through its worst time ever.
