Five buried alive after canal breach

FAISALABAD: Five people were buried alive after a breach in the Rakh Branch Canal inundated the site of the Abdullahpur underpass project late Friday night. According to a spokesman for the Faisalabad City District Government, bank of the canal ruptured at the site of underpass and canal water inundated the project site. Workers at the site made announcements in nearby mosques to warn people living in adjacent areas to avoid the site but a number of people reached the site and gathered on the sides of the dug-up site. Five people were buried alive when an earth heap collapsed into the accumulated water. DCO Ameen Chaudhry said Usman and Tahir were rescued. He said a three-member committee had been formed to probe the incident. It will submit its report in three days. The dead are Akhtar Majeed (30), Atif (22), Qadeer (18), Mehmood Ahmad (30) and Junaid, all residents of Tariqabad. End.
