DUBAI – Foreign Office on Friday confirmed the arrest of renowned TV anchor Dr Moeed Pirzada.

Interior Ministry sources also confirmed the news saying that a close female relative was also arrested along with Moeed Pirzada. According to the sources, he was in Dubai Police’s custody since August 4.

“Moeed Pirzada was arrested in Abu Dhabi on August 4,” Foreign Office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah said. “Our embassy in the United Arab Emirates is in contact with authorities over there and will provide all possible assistance to Pirzada,” he added.

The spokesperson said that the reason for Pirzada’s arrest could not yet be ascertained. However, social networking site, Twitter, was abuzz with rumours that Pirzada was arrested for forging property documents.

He was active on Twitter a few hours earlier where he had tweeted, “My father is critically ill and spending time with him overseas. Keep us in your prayers!”

According to legal experts, law for committing, aiding and abetting forgery in the UAE is three years imprisonment without payroll for foreigners.
