09 March, 2006
ISLAMABAD, March 10(Online): Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad has rejected US State Department report on human rights violation in Pakistan expressing wonder that the elements identifying human rights abuses in Pakistan are closing eyes to inhuman and humiliating treatment meted out to the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Gharib prison.
Talking to Online on Thursday, Sheikh Rashid said there had never been as much democracy and freedom of expression in the country as it is today. People have full freedom of expression, press is free and senate and national and provincial assemblies are functioning.
State Department should take note of the insulting incidents of Guantanamo Bay and Abu Gharib jail before raising voice on human rights violations in Pakistan, he underscored.
There is full religious freedom in the country and the minorities for the first time in the history have been granted equal right to vote, he remarked.
No murder had been committed in the name of religion nor the political partiers were being subjected to political victimization, he said.
Those who are arrested are involved in corruption charges and some are sitting outside the country on their own , he added. End.
