ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar said in the Senate on Monday that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) did not take permission for putting on its website the details of contesting candidates' assets and liabilities before the May elections, and the commission should have sought the consent of the government prior to this.

Speaking in the House on a point of order, the minister regretted that for the last few weeks, parliamentarians and members of provincial assemblies were being maligned as if they did not pay tax and made it clear that their taxes were deducted at source from their salaries.

However, he maintained that 12 percent senators, MNAs and MPAs still did not have NTN and added this did not mean they were tax defaulters. The minister contended that being elected representatives of people, legislators should demonstrate high moral values and transparency in their conduct.

He said that he had asked the FBR to issue NTN to all those lawmakers, who did not have yet by January 31 and said by February 15, their tax details would be made public and within two months, the information about all taxpayers across Pakistan would be shared with public.

End.
