ECP gives govt 24 hours to remove SBP deputy chief

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), while taking serious notice of the non-implementation of its directives, on Wednesday gave Ministry of Finance 24 hours to remove State Bank of Pakistan Deputy Governor Ashraf Mahmood Wathra and submit the compliance report.
The ECP, taking notice of the appointment of Wathra in violation of the ban imposed by ECP on fresh recruitments, had sought government's point of view over violation of electoral body's directives.
The Finance Ministry told the commission on Wednesday that the government had appointed Wathra on merit and in accordance with the State Bank rules.
However, it could not explain reason for the violation of ECP order. The commission rejected ministry's point of view and directed the government to remove the deputy governor within 24 hours.
