Drug trafficking... By Shadman

I wish to draw the attention of the authorities and the public to the evils of the drugs mafia. In Karachi, some two million children and young adults are at risk of drug addiction as the prevalence of drug addiction is very high in this mega city. A Karachi-based NGO working on the issues of street children and youth reported to a reputable news agency that in Karachi over two million youth are addicted, and the rest of the youth and children are also at high risk of drug addiction as drug trafficking is prevalent in every part of the city. In Karachi, the main addiction is to hashish because this drug is easily available in every nook and corner of the city. The main trafficking areas of hashish are Sohrab Goth, Banaras, Pahar Ganj, Azam Basti, Frontier Colony, Qaidabad, Chanessar Goth, Dhobi Ghat and Massan near Keamari among other places. The drug mafia also seems to be operating with political backing because law enforcement agencies have failed to stop the rapid growth of drug trafficking in the city. The drug mafia has also taken an ethnic cover and their drug business is flourishing with the backing of some personnel of the law enforcement agencies and some prominent political figures. This needs to stop by having effective legislation in place and a strict police force that will do its job. MUHAMMAD SHADMAN
