Doctor, Army soldier among five shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI: Assistant professor of medicine Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Dr Asad Usman was killed along with his police guard near Matric Board Office within the precincts of Nazimabad police station on Tuesday.

According to police, four unidentified armed riders, on two motorcycles, targeted the doctor, who sustained multiple bullet wounds. The victim was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced Dr Usman, 45, dead on arrival, and his guard Irfan succumbed to injuries during treatment.

The officer said that the deceased was on his way home, after performing his duties, adding that he was also a professor at a dental college. On a question the said officer informed that the police guard was deployed for the doctors security, because he had been receiving threats for the past six months.

Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) has also strongly condemned the target killing of Dr Usman and his guard. It demanded that the government should immediately take notice of continuous killing of doctor and threats posed to their lives. In a statement, Central President, PIMA, Dr Misbah-ul-Aziz demanded government to announce financial help for the relief of grieved family.

In separate incidents of targeted incidents, a Pakistan Army soldier, an MQM activist and three other people were shot dead in different parts of the city. In Al Badar Society, armed motorcyclists fired at a Suzuki pickup, carrying Ejaz, 25, Shafi alias Bhaiya, 30 and Yaseen Hussain. The critically injured victims were rushed to the hospital where Ejaz and Shafi were pronounced dead on arrival and Hussain was provided with necessary treatment.

Al Falah police said that Ejaz, hailing from Chakwal was an on-duty soldier of Pakistan Army and was on vacations, adding that the deceased was a resident of Malir Shamsi Society. The officer further said that Shafi was affiliated with the MQM.

In Shah Faisal a 43-year-old man was killed inside his house. Shah Faisal police said that the victim Malik Iftikhar was shot dead by at least two armed culprits, who barged into his house and sprayed him with bullets. The victim received multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot. He said that the deceased was a father of three children and hailed from Punjab. His body was shifted to the JPMC for a post mortem.

Meanwhile, a surveyor of Pak Arab refinery was killed near Malir Naddi. Sharafi Goth police station SHO Akhlaq Ahmed said that two unidentified armed pillion riders opened indiscriminate fire at a vehicle, as a result 42-year-old Mansoor Zaki received multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot. The body was shifted to the JPMC for medico legal formalities.
