Deadly disease on the loose... By Ausaf

According to a report in a section of the press, around 10 people have so far died in different hospitals in Karachi since May this year due to brain-eating amoeba. Senior physicians are still clueless about the spread of the much-dreaded brain-eating amoeba or naegleria fowleri. The report further said that swimming in public pools with inadequate arrangement for chlorination was believed to be the only cause behind contracting the dreaded amoeba infection. It suggested that the administrators of all clubs, messes and schools having a swimming pool should ensure the proper arrangement of chlorination regularly, making sure that the pool is cleaned before refilling the water. Similarly, no individual should be allowed to swim unless he/she has obtained a medical certificate from the skin specialist stating that they have no skin disease. Moreover, swimmers should not be allowed to enter the pool without taking a shower. S AUSAF HUSAIN
