Constable shot dead, police station attacked in Karachi

KARACHI: A policeman was killed and eight others, including two policemen were wounded in Malir on Monday.
According to details, an alleged gangster, Naveed Baloch, 27, died under mysterious circumstances in police custody. The deceased was arrested along with two of his accomplices on Sunday from Aansu Goth area, within Malir City police remit. The three men were apprehended over their involvement in target killing, extortion and kidnapping in the city.
Following the killing of Baloch, his family, relatives and residents of the locality gathered outside the Malir City police station and staged a protest against the killing, holding the police responsible for his death.
The protesters turned violent and pelted stones at the police station. An extra contingent of law enforcers was quick to reach the police station and resorted to aerial firing in order to disperse the protesters.
As a reaction to police action, unidentified armed men lobbed a hand grenade on a police mobile which wounded at least eight people, including two policemen. The injured were taken to Jinnah Postgradaute Medical Centre for treatment.
Later, armed men kidnapped Constable Farman, shot him dead, and threw his dead body outside the police station.
After the tragic incident, law enforcers launched an operation in Aansu Goth and adjoining areas and later claimed to have arrested 30 suspects and seized their weapons which included G-3 rifles and sub machineguns (SMGs).
Meanwhile, Rangers and police claimed to have apprehended around 200 suspects during separate targeted raids across the city on Monday.
Rangers also recovered a truck loaded with automatic weapons and drugs, along with detaining around a dozen suspects from Old Sabzi Mandi. Rangers' spokesman said they raided on the hideout of the People's Aman Committee's (PAC) Darvesh near Old Sabzi Mandi, and recovered a truck having a huge cache of automatic weapons as well as a huge quantity of narcotics hidden in apple crates. The arrested suspects belong to a faction of the PAC, and were shifted to an undisclosed location for further questioning, he added.
Meanwhile, Rangers arrested around 48 suspects during targeted operations in Mehran Town, Baloch Colony, Haji Mureed Goth, Karnal Basti, Quaidabad, Gabol Park, Taiser Town and other areas, rounding up 48 suspected criminals. The supposed criminals included target killers, extortionists and members of Lyari gang war. Most of the criminals were associated with local political groups, said the spokesman.
Similarly, police also nabbed around 144 suspects along with weapons during the last 24 hours from areas including Nazimabad, Darakhshan and Korangi. The arrested were allegedly involved in target killings, extortion, kidnapping and others heinous crimes, said the police officials.
