Civil society leaders concerned over threat to Asma Jahangir's life

LAHORE: Different personalities belonging to various civil society organisations and bar associations have expressed serious concern and alarm at the information leak from a responsible and highly credible source that there was a serious threat to the life of the country's leading human rights activist and one of the most influential leaders of the bar, Asma Jahangir.
The people who spoke out included Justice (r) Fakhruddin Ebrahim, Dr Mubashir Hassan, IA Rehman, SCBA President Yasin Azad, Pakistan Bar Council President Akhtar Hussain, Ali Ahmad Kurd, Tariq Mahmood, Muneer A Malik, Lt Gen (r) Talat Masood, Air Marshal (r) Zafar Chaudhry, senior journalist Ahmed Rashid, Peshawar High Court Bar President Latif Afridi, Lahore High Court Bar Association President Shahryam Sarwar Chaudhry, Balochistan High Court Bar Association President Zahoor Ahmad Shawani, Malakand High Court Bar Association President Sher Muhammad, Azam Nazir Tarar, Ehsan Bhoon, Justice (r) Malik Saeed Hassan, SM Masood, ANP General Secretary Ehsan Wyne, Prof Salima Hashmi, Hina Jilani, Munir Kakar, Jugnu Mohsin, Kamran Shafi, Kamran Arif, Rashed Rahman, Fareeda Shaheed, Samina Rehman, Dr Mehdi Hassan, Dr Haroon Ahmed, Saleem Asmi, Tahir Hassan, Neelam Hussain, Kishwar Naheed, Khawar Mumtaz, Nazish Ataullah, Shahtaj Qizilbash, Nasreen Azhar, Abbas Rashid, Nighat Saeed, Sajid Bashir, Shahzad Hassan Sheikh and Muhammad Tahseen.
They said, "What makes the reported conspiracy to liquidate Asma Jahangir especially serious is, firstly, the environment of target killings in which dissident persons' dead bodies are being dumped all over, and, secondly, the fact that the finger of accusation has been pointed at the extraordinarily privileged state actors."
