KARACHI: Christians celebrated Easter from sunrise to midnight with fervour in the metropolis on Sunday.
They attended prayer meetings in churches, held parties at homes and other places and presented gifts to children.
The Christian community made elaborate arrangements to commemorate the central religious feast. Midnight services were performed in different churches throughout the city.
The celebrations began on Saturday night when Christians attended midnight candle services in churches across the city, including St Patrick’s, St Anthony’s and Holy Trinity churches.
Many activities were also held to mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Sunday. The Christian community observes Easter as a feast of life, love, tolerance and peace.
Easter marks the end of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, and the last week of the Lent is called Holy Week.
The main gathering of Catholic Christians was held at the St Patrick’s Church in Saddar. The Christians attended midnight candle services at churches across the city.
Easter is followed by 50-day period, called Eastertide or the Easter Season ending with Pentecost Sunday. Easter Sunday is typically the most well attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches as the Christian community holds prayers and special ceremonies to mark the Easter week.
The Friday before Easter Sunday is observed as a mourning day that Jesus died on Good Friday while Easter Sunday is celebrated as ‘Jesus resurrected on Easter Sunday.’
