Call for making electoral process more transparent

QUETTA: Political parties in Balochistan have stressed the need for making electoral process more transparent, further empowering the relevant institutions through correction of errors in voter lists, eradication of bogus votes and inclusion of picture of female voters in the lists.
Members of political parties were speaking at a seminar held under the aegis of Democracy Reporting International with support from European Union on Monday.
Opposition Leader in the Balochistan Assembly (BA) and leader of Awami National Party (ANP) Engineer Zakrak Khan Achakzai, provincial minister for local government Sardar Mustafa Khan Tareen, Central Vice Organiser of Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal) Dr Jahanzaib Jamaldini, provincial president of Pakhtunkhwa Mili Awami Party (PkMAP) Usman Kakar and others were present on the occasion.
The speakers also stressed upon the political parties to follow the stipulated parameters during the elections, adding that it had been observed that during the elections political parties take such steps that impinge the rights of the other political parties.
They also praised the government of Balochistan for successful conduct of local government elections following the Supreme Court orders. They said that changes were imperative in voter lists and electoral reforms. Number of politicians on the occasion lashed out at the recent electoral process and said that changes in this regard would result in a successful democratic set up.
They also demanded establishment of special parliamentary committees for looking into the electoral process before the elections in line with the international law. They also seconded the recommendations formed by the Democracy Reporting International (DRI) and said that the constituencies have to be reviewed and countrywide new constituencies have to be formed. They asked the Election Commission to form a transparent and clear system of tribunals to receive the complaints regarding rigging in elections.
They also said that democratic process has to be introduced within the political parties.
