Brother of MQM's ex-MPA shot dead in Karachi

13 June, 2012

KARACHI: Two years after the Shershah scrap market tragedy, businessmen at the market saw another similar incident on Tuesday as two armed men shot dead a trader and injured another. Both victims were brothers of Syed Shakir Ali, former member provincial assembly (MPA) who belonged to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

The armed men, riding a motorcycle, came to Shershah scrap market, entered the victim's iron sheets godown near Jehanabad police check-post, targeted both brothers and fled after swift operation. The traders and shopkeepers have announced a complete shutter-down strike on Wednesday (today) in the city against the incident. MQM and Sunni Tehraeek (ST) have supported the strike call.

Traders and shopkeepers of the market closed their shops and staged a protest against the incident. They shouted slogans against the government, police, Rangers and Lyari gangsters.

Shershah Market Association president Mohammad Zahid has strongly condemned the incident and said that all the shops and business would remain suspended on Wednesday (today).

Following the incident, Jehanabad police post in-charge and six other policemen were suspended as they did not respond at the time of the incident.

The victims were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where according to doctors, Syed Qarar Ali, 60, had died before reaching the hospial, while Syed Zakir Ali, 42, was under treatment. Several people, including MQM leader Wasay Jalil, also rushed to the hospital. The mob while blaming the Lyari gangsters condemned the incident and shouted slogans against the incident. The deceased was eldest among 10 siblings. His brother Shakir Ali was elected as Sindh assembly member (MPA) from PS-96 constituency, Burns Road in 2002.

West Zone SSP Amir Farooqui said that it was an act of target killing. He said that there was an issue of extortion in the market but this incident had no link to the extortion.

DIG East Naeem Akram Baroka suspended Jehanabad check-post in-charge and other five police constables for showing negligence in duty.

Meanwhile, funeral prayer of Qarar Ali was offered at Shadab Ground in Federal B Area, Block 11. The victim was later laid to rest at the Shah Mohammad Graveyard, North Karachi.

End.
