QUETTA: As many as three people were killed and 19 others injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) ripped through the busy Zarghoon Road of the capital of Balochistan, on Wednesday.

The explosion badly damaged several vehicles and shops. According to the Bomb Disposal Squad eight kilogrammes of explosive was used in the blast. Balochistan Home Secretary Asad Gillani confirmed to the newsmen that three people were killed in the attack and 19 injured. He suspects the explosion is linked to the recent bombing of a police station by a banned outfit that took eight lives.

The blast shattered the windowpanes of many surrounding buildings and caused an explosion in the CNG cylinder of a rickshaw that was parked nearby. This second blast caused a stampede at the site. At least seven vehicles caught fire after the bombing and were burnt down. Rescue workers, fire tenders, security forces and a large number of policemen reached the blast site shortly after the incident and cordoned off the area.

The rescue workers faced problems in shifting the injured to the hospitals due to a massive traffic jam on the narrow thoroughfares of the city caused by the panic following the twin explosions that shook the city. The firefighters had to make hectic efforts to put out the fire. The dead and injured were taken to the Sandeman Hospital where a state of emergency had already been declared to cope with the situation.

End.
