Blueberries and Strawberries Reduce Heart Attack

Washington: Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health followed 93,600 women age 25 to 42 for 18 years looking at the relationship of various dietary factors and the risk for heart disease. They found that women who consumed more than three servings per week of a combination of blueberries and strawberries had a 32 percent reduced risk for a heart attack. The researchers pointed out that berries benefit the endothelial lining of the circulatory system, which helps keep it healthier. This helps prevent plaque buildup in arteries as well as assists blood pressure. Dietary supplements of blueberry and strawberry concentrates contain equivalent concentrations of the active anthocyanins, which are the components of these fruits that provide benefit.
