Attitudes regarding rape... By Jahanara

01 January, 2013

I am deeply saddened by the death of the New Delhi gang rape victim. After battling for her life, she has gone, leaving behind a public deeply enraged by the rape and its consequences. There are calls for the death penalty and castration. However, nothing will change until we change the mentality of society. Both India and Pakistan have a strongly patriarchal mindset that needs to be questioned and altered. It is a fact that most rapes in both countries go unreported and are the reason behind why men feel so empowered to take advantage of women — they know no action will be taken against them. We need to change how we view rape, even if that means accepting men for who they are.
