Appropriate action... By Mahrukh

16 October, 2012

It is disheartening that the most our government can do to take action against a blasphemous film is to block the platform that provides it. This is the usual approach of the government, which prefers to bury its head in the sand instead of tackling a problem effectively. The ban on YouTube is hardly relevant as a majority of the site's users are using proxies to access the video sharing site.

The appropriate action should have been strong opposition — not violent protests — and a serious appeal from the Muslim community all over the world to immediately take action against the film. They should have asked, in confident tones, to have the film removed from online forums and should have pushed for legal action against all those involved in the making of the movie to make people realise that it is not so easy to hurt the sentiments of an entire religious community and get away with it.
