Another journalist shot dead in Kalat

02 March, 2013

QUETTA: Unidentified gunmen on Friday shot dead a local journalist in Balochistan province, officials said.

Mahmood Khan Afridi, 38, was killed in Qalat district, local administration chief Akbar Harifal told AFP."Gunmen riding on a motorbike opened fire on Afridi, who was passing through the main bazaar of Qalat, and fled. Afridi died on the spot," Harifal said.

"We have launched an investigation to determine if the motive was rivalry or a targeted attack." Provincial chief secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani confirmed the killing. No one has claimed responsibility for the murder.

In a statement, Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) strongly condemned the murder of Afridi and demanded immediate arrest of culprits involved in his brutal murder. Announcing a three-day-mourning, BUJ said that Afridi was discharging his professional duty in Kalat district for the last 12 years.

"The murder of Mehmood Afridi in broad daylight is a slap on the face of provincial and federal administration," the statement said, adding that so far 30 journalists had been targeted killing in Balochistan. Afridi is the second journalist killed in Pakistan this week.

End.
