Allies discuss polls, caretaker setup

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of heads of the allied parties was held at the Presidency on Tuesday to discuss the forthcoming elections and the caretaker setup.

Chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, the meeting was attended by former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Dr Farooq Sattar, Babar Ghouri, Raza Haroon, Afrasiab Khattak, Haji Muhammad Adeel, Munir Khan Orakzai, Hameedullah Jan Afridi, Senator Abbas Khan Afridi, Israrullah Zehri, Syed Kurshid Ahmad Shah, Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Qamar Zaman Kaira and Spokesperson to the president, Senator Farhatullah Babar.

Babar said that the meeting discussed the forthcoming elections and the caretaker setup in accordance with the constitution. He said that Law Minister Farook H Naek was specially summoned to brief the meeting on the constitutional provision relating to the holding of elections and the appointment of a caretaker setup. The coalition partners expressed their views on various dimensions of the issues involved. The meeting expressed the resolve that elections will be held on time and the nominations of the caretaker setup will be made in accordance with the constitution.

Briefing the meeting, Law Minister Naek said that the caretaker prime minister, under the constitution, will be appointed by the president in consultation with the prime minister and the leader of the opposition in the outgoing National Assembly. In case of a disagreement within three days of the dissolution of the National Assembly, the prime minister and leader of opposition shall forward two nominees each to a committee to be constituted by the National Assembly speaker, comprising eight members of the outgoing National Assembly or the Senate or both having equal representation from the treasury and the opposition.
