AGP Irfan tells ECP 'to follow constitution, not SC'

21 September, 2012

ISLAMABAD: In a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Attorney General Irfan Qadir on Thursday asked whether the Supreme Court was mandated to issue directions to the commission or not.

The letter read, "In my view, the Election Commission of Pakistan has the exclusive obligation to determine the questions of disqualification as per the relevant constitutional provisions and as such the ECP is not to perform its functions on the directions of any court in Pakistan, including the Supreme Court."

Attorney General Irfan Qadir wrote the letter after the Supreme Court disqualified 11 dual national lawmakers on Thursday.

End.
