A family affair...By S T Hussain

Nawaz Sharif's government is spending a huge amount on media advertisements for the launch of the prime minister's Rs 100 billion Youth Business Loan Scheme (YBLS), which will be managed by his daughter Maryam Nawaz. Why does she have to be responsible for the implementation of the scheme? It could lead to misuse of authority and misappropriation of public money for personal projection and politics. It is not the first time that Nawaz Sharif is using government owned banks to suffer huge losses for providing money to very risky projects, as we have seen in the past in the case of the yellow taxi scheme. The banks still have to recover huge amounts and there are hardly any yellow taxis on the road.
My question is: why are such schemes not put up in the National Assembly for debate? Why has Nawaz Sharif not learnt any lessons from his past mistakes and not changed his style of governance, this being his third time as elected prime minister? Why must he make the government a family enterprise? He does not want to share power with his party leaders keeping a number of important ministries to himself.
