A controversial bill... By Muhammad Khan
03 October, 2012
The ruling PPP has finally gotten the controversial Sindh People's Local Government Ordinance (SPLGO) passed in the Sindh Assembly despite a majority of the members of the house being against it. The opposition demonstrated quite forcefully against this bill but to no avail. This instance reminds me of the resolution passed by the same assembly in 1954 favouring the controversial One Unit. The proper way to tackle controversial issues is to first present some amendments in the assembly and, after detailed discussion, amend the law in a democratic atmosphere. It is very sad that the PPP members of the Sindh government, who pose themselves as champions of the rights of the people of Sindh, are bent upon ignoring the wishes of the majority of the people. I am saddened to say that Sindh is being plagued by bad governance. By spending a huge amount of the taxpayer's money on futile advertising campaigns to promote the performance of the Sindh government, the powers that be seem to be ignoring the needs of the people.
