8 civilians among 13 die in security incidents

KABUL: Eight civilians and five militants were killed in security incidents in different parts of the country during the past 24 hours, officials said on Monday. A senior government official was stabbed in Nangarhar. Director of Public Works Fazal Rabi Walizai was wounded by four unidentified men in the Hadda Farm area on the outskirts of Jalalabad Monday morning, said the victim's brother, Abdullah. He told Pajhwok Afghan News that Walizai the assailants wanted to kidnap his brother. Having failed in their attempt, they stabbed Walizai and fled the scene. The official, who is receiving medical care at the Nangarhar Civil Hospital, is in stable condition, according to the hospital's deputy head, Syed Effendi. Police spokesman Mohammad Hassan Mashriqiwal said an investigation had been launched into the incident. Efforts were underway to track down the assailants, he added. Separately, three children and two bomb planters were killed as a result of an airstrike by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the Nawa district of Helmand province. District police chief, 1st Lt. Ahmad Shah, expressed grief over the children's killing, blaming the Taliban for seeking shelter in civilian houses. A statement from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), meanwhile, confirmed the air raid. A statement from the NATO-led force said three militants were killed. ISAF added it was unaware of the death of children. In central Afghanistan, three members of a family were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Jaghatu district of Maidan Wardak province, said the governor's spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid. Meanwhile, two members of a family were killed and as many injured during a clash with the insurgents in the Hayat area of Nirkh district. The Taliban inflicted casualties on civilians, said the district chief, Hanifi. Two fighters were killed and an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier and four civilians wounded during a firefight in the Tagab district of central Kapisa province. End.
