74 released from Herat Jail

13 September, 2012

HERAT: As many as 74 prisoners were released from Herat prison following the presidential decree issued on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, a jail official said Wednesday.

The prisoners who were released following the 54th decree of the Afghan president had spent most of their jail term, said General Shamir Amirpur, jailer of Herat prison.

He said the presence of 700 drug addicts, shortage of space and delay in deciding the cases of prisoners were the major problems being faced by the jail authorities.

He said it was the second time that prisoners were released in connection with previous Eid in the past several days.

The Herat Jail is currently hosting 2580 inmates including 122 women.

According to local officials a new detention facility would be established with US assistance of $2 million.

End.
