23 army men killed in road accident

17 March, 2013

ABBOTTABAD: At least 23 army personnel, including an officer, were killed while six others were injured in a road accident in Kohistan district of Hazara. The accident happened when the driver of a coaster, while trying to negotiate a turn near Samar Nullah, lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into a deep ravine.

An ISPR press release said that according to initial information, a total of 27 passengers, including 25 soldiers and two civilians (driver and conductor) were in the coaster. These soldiers of the Northern Light Infantry Battalion (NLI) belonged to Gilgit-Baltistan and were proceeding on leave from Swat to Gilgit.

Kohistan DPO Akbar Ali said that the coaster had plunged into a ditch on the Karakoram Highway and that rescue workers reached the accident spot immediately. However, they had a tough time in carrying out the rescue work due to the mountainous terrain.

End.
