2 suspects in Mauripur murder, gang rape case held

KARACHI: Law enforcers on Monday claimed to arrest 92 criminals, including two Lyari gangsters behind the killing of four family members in Mauripur.

Their arrests were disclosed during a press conference.

District West police chief DIG Javed Odho informed that the arrested culprits also subjected the deceased woman and her injured daughter to rape before shooting. "The arrested persons nominated in the FIR were affiliated with the Lyari gang war," he said. "The victims had also been kicked out from the area in the past by these gangsters. Now, they killed and raped them to take revenge of their returning back."

The head of the family Muzaffar was associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, and apparently there was a political motive behind the killings, said DIG Odho. He said two culprits have so far been arrested with weapons while the raids for the remaining six continue.

The Mauripur incident took place on early hours of Sunday, when at least eight armed gangsters shot Muzaffar, his wife and two sons before leaving. Muzaffar's wife and daughter were also raped.

Separately, police killed two alleged bandits and their accomplices were arrested after the exchange of fire in High Court Society area of Sohrab Goth Industrial Area.

The encounter took place when armed bandits riding on motorbikes were signalled to stop on their way; when they declined to do so and opened fire, police retaliated and as all the bandits sustained bullets wounds. They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where two of them succumbed to their injuries.

The deceased were identified as Bashir Asghar, 25 and Saleem Hassan, 28, while the injured as Asghar Shah. They were residents of New Karachi's Lasi Goth.

SHO Haseeb claimed the deceased and arrested men were professional criminals and had also been imprisoned in jail several times. "They were involved in many cases looting and snatching of valuables.

Similarly, Rangers claimed to nab 17 criminals including Lyari gang war elements and members of banned outfits. Weapons were also recovered. Raids were conducted in Micassa Centre, Landhi, Old Golimar, Pathan Colony, Frontier Colony, Manghopir, Lyari, Korangi, Malir City, Faqir Colony, 400 Quarters, Usmanabad and other areas.

Rangers' spokesman said targeted raids were also conducted in terrorists' hideouts of Faisal Pathan Group of Lyari gang war in Gulistan Colony, Lyari. They recovered an abducted person, while three gangsters were also arrested.

Moreover, Karachi police claimed to have arrested around 71 criminals during separate targeted raids and operations conducted across the city. The official also recovered weapons from their custody.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Coast Guards claimed to recover a huge cache of narcotics during a raid in Super Highway. According to PCG spokesperson, PCG officials on a tip-off intercepted a truck and recovered around 100 kilogrammes of hashish worth-Rs 157 million, and arrested a truck driver. He said that the recovered material was being smuggled to Karachi from Quetta.
