172 people killed in Ramazan in Karachi

KARACHI: As many as 172 people lost their lives during the Holy month of Ramazan in the metropolis either because of target killing or abduction. People who lost their lives include 105 'innocent' people, 13 cops, seven workers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement, three workers of Awami National Party, one worker of Pakistan People's Party and one of Pakistan Sunni Tehreek.
As per Human Right Commission of Pakistan's and media reports, about 1,800 people lost their lives in separate incidents of violence. While in January 291 people were killed, February 271, March 311, April 262, May 278 and in June as many as 313 people were killed.
The law and order situation in Karachi has been worsening on a daily basis where besides, frequent killings of common citizens, political and religious workers, the attacks and killings of the personnel of the law enforcement agencies have also become a regular routine.
In several different attacks on law enforcers, a total of 13 policemen lost their lives during the holy month. The major attack was on August 3, at a police party near Shahrah-e-Faisal Bridge, where unidentified armed motorcyclists resorted to indiscriminate firing. The incident resulted in the demise of four policemen of Sharafi Goth Police Station.
Police investigators believed that the terrorists used different calibres of weapons, as 20 empty shells of rifle and pistol were retrieved from the crime scene. The shells were sent to the forensic division of Sindh police.
It was a silent, planned attack and the aim of the terrorist is to demoralise the police force, and deter them from carrying out their activities against criminal and terror elements. An FIR No 166/13 under Section 302/34 and 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act was registered at Sharafi Goth on behalf of State against unidentified persons.
Earlier on July 20, terrorists targeted Metropolitan Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan along with his security guards near Essa Nagri, while he was on his way to work. The commissioner was attacked via a planted bomb that was detonated when he was close. The blast resulted in injuring Commissioner Khan and fiver others.
In the same month, at least two Rangers personnel Khalid and Shakoor were also wounded in a low intensity explosion in Manghopir.
The areas in which the most cases of target killing were reported, include Sohrab Goth, Memon Goth, Sacchal, Gabol Town, Malir City, Mochko, Baldia, Mominabad, Saeedabad, Orangi, Shara-e-Faisal, Shah Latif, Quaidabad, Shara-e-Faisal, Pirabad and Maripur are also on the hit list of the terrorists.
Law enforcers including rangers and police conduct dozens of operations and targeted raids in various localities of port city on a daily basis and hundreds of suspects are kept in custody for interrogation. Suspects in majority are later released after questioning; some of them are booked in petty crimes while very few remain in the custody.
