16 killed, 22 injured in bus-lorry collision

PESHAWAR: At least 16 people were killed and 22 others injured on Saturday when a passenger bus collided with a lorry near Spina Banda area of District Karak, officials said.

The accident happened as the bus travelled from Karachi to Swabi in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The driver lost control as he was overtaking a lorry on a sharp bend when another bus appeared from the opposite direction, local administration chief Sajjad Khan told AFP by telephone.

"The driver tried to avert a collision with the bus and smashed into the lorry which he had been overtaking," Khan said quoting wounded passengers.

"At least 16 people were killed and 22 wounded, including women and children."

He said Spina Banda, where the accident took place, was very dangerous with drivers going to fast. "We have one or two fatal accidents every week because drivers while descending usually lose control," he said.

The injured were shifted to Karak District Headquarters Hospital.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Prisons Nisar Gul and the Karak DPO reached the spot to monitor relief operation. Gul told APP he had directed the hospital officials concerned to provide best medical facilities to the injured. He also expressed sympathies with the heirs of those who had lost their lives.

Pakistan has one of the world's worst records for fatal traffic accidents, blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

Those who lost their lives included Satam Jan, wife of Muhammad Aslam, residents of Kimari in Karachi; Anwar Ali, son of Haji Muhammad, resident of Karnal Sher Khan village in Swabi; Shakeel Khan, son of Haji Muhammad, resident of Karnal Sher Khan village in Swabi; Sartaj Muhammad Khan, son of Muhammad Khalid, resident of District Nowshera; Muhammad Tufail, son of Zar Gul; Hunar Khan, son of Qambarkhail in Bara, Khyber Agency; Dawood Khan, son of Iladar Khan, resident of Mohallah Sultan Khan, District Swabi; Nisar Hussain, son of Noshad Khan, resident of Dobain village, Swabi;

Swat Khan, son of Mumtaz Ali from Gumal Khailpur; Khurshhid Begum, wife of Nisar Hussain, resident of Dobain, Swabi; Fawad Khan, son of Noshad Ali, resident of Swabi; Sani Gul, son of Nisar Hussain from Swabi; and Arbabz Khan, son of Nisar Hussain from Swabi.

The injured included Naeemullah, Rehmatullah, Romin Akhtar, Taj Muhammad, Nisar Khan, Aziz Gul, Marium, Ayesha, Muneeza, Zakir Hussain, Saeed Khan, Yasmeen,

Spina Gul, Kamil Khan, Noor Ali Khan, Najma, Hasan Zaiba, Qismat Khan, Sajjad Khan, Fazal Dawood, and Asif Bajwa.
